Digby Scallop Days Recap by SPECIAL GUEST BLOGGER...

It's Andrew Foote from the AVR Princess of Acadia Community Cruiser!

I was the man as far as it came to Scallop Days this past weekend, so I have graciously been allowed to share my seaside experience for y'all on Jerry's Blog, as the morning man was only able to make it to Digby for all of about 2.5 hours all festival while I was there for part of every day.

Wednesday I was woken up by Jerry on the phone earlier than expected, so to compromise for that I downed a Jolt Cola, my first energy drink in quite some time. It began to show at our Sticker Patrol at the local Shell station as I was hopping higher and dancing more purposefully than ever before as I brought the win stickers down to the southwest. Following that I took my jittery self to Peck's Audiotronic, where Tim Peck's Scallop Day Sale was taking place and he was also hosting a meet-and-greet with the 8 lovely Scallop Days Princesses.

Tim, surrounded by royalty

Thursday I made a quick stop by Scotiashare Automotive's sale happening right off the 101 exit before heading to the Bike Rodeo happening at Canadian Tire. The RCMP put together a Q and A on bike safety and took children through a course they set up in the parking lot, and Yarmouth native Tim MacKinnon brough out his customized bikes as an added attraction. Also Thursday was the Tideview Tea, where residents got to ask the princesses their impromptu questions and where the menu included bacon-wrapped scallops and some delicious desserts. My lanky frame makes it hard for me to sit at a table daintily, but I put all my ettiquete to use and made a good effort.

10 foot long custom bike!

Friday I spent most of the day in New Minas, where Sugarland's anthem "It Happens" proved to be true (all I am going to say on the subject) and I ended up leaving for Digby 2 hours late. I finally arrived at the Mountain Gap Inn around 11 to find a lovely room waiting for me, with a patio out back that looked over a spacious lawn complete with giant chess set, pool and hot tub. I quickly unpacked and settled for for a long summer's nap. Sometime between the time I was fascinated by a cow-shaped cloud floating over the moon (like in the nursery rhyme) and I passed some bikers popping wheelies on the 101, Josie Zakhour was named Scallop Queen at the coronation.

Remote Gear, Jones Soda for the weekend, as well as my luggage. Anything else, and I would have had to hope nothing happened behind me the whole drive down . . .

View of the Mountain Gap room; yes that is Friday Night Football playing on the TV.

A good bet for the biggest day of any festival is Saturday, and the same case can be made for Scallop Days. I met up with Bronwen, our Digby sales rep who helped so much over the weekend, as well as Larry from the weekend (one princess upon being prepped to be interviewed by him: "HEY! I know that voice!") for a remote at the Shoreline Restaurant on the waterfront and their amazing breakfast that was gone in all of maybe 3 minutes when we got our forks in it (good stuff comes out of our mouth when we're on the radio, so good stuff like that should also be coming in).

Good morning Digby.

Larry, talking breakfast

The whole time we were there I had 7/4 Shoreline by Canadian band Broken Social Scene stuck in my head (I must share, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uev2J_cBHjQ) and the royal party stopped by for breakfast, some interviews and the children's parade. I will also use this platform to toot my own horn and let everyone know that I had the idea to have the kids go around the boardwalk for the children's parade, you can ask festival Chair Mike Bartlett. If I can't get entered into the pageant as "Prince Clam" as was tossed about Wednesday morning, then I can at least gun for the job of Lisa Misner, Apple Blossom Children's Parade Director for next year.

Here comes the parade

Josie Zakhour, Scallop Queen 2009 would be furthest on the left with the cape and big crown.

Afterwards was the grand street parade which is one of the biggest parades in my 2 years of experience (Apple Blossom and Festival Acadien de Clare rank up there as well) and we had lots of giveaways from Pecks' to distribute. Digby also lets the spectators get very close to the floats once they get into the waterfront area, so I did not have to yell as loud to talk to them. I was near the front so I got to snap some pictures of the Wharf Rat Rally vehicle and some bald traitor in the Magic 94.9 Cruiser.

Lions and Oasis juice.
